[City, State] – A new lawsuit has been filed against a Popeyes restaurant in Atlanta, Georgia, following an incident where employees allegedly attacked a woman in the drive-thru after she attempted to have her order corrected. Denetra Dawson claims that during the altercation, the employees pulled out a chunk of her hair, leaving her bruised and traumatized.

The incident reportedly occurred in September 2022 at the Popeyes location on Cleveland Avenue in southwest Atlanta. According to the lawsuit filed on Friday, Dawson had tried to have her incorrect order fixed when words were exchanged, leading to the alleged physical assault by the employees.

“I didn’t even think I was going to make it back to my kids,” Dawson told Fox 5 Atlanta. “I simply went to get food for my kids, I still don’t understand why me.”

Attorney Mawuli Davis from The David Bozeman Law Firm, who is representing Dawson, revealed that one employee physically entered Dawson’s vehicle through the passenger door and proceeded to attack her. Dawson claims that three employees were involved in the assault, and she was only able to stop them when she pulled out a gun. She subsequently called the Atlanta Police.

Two individuals, Tenice Taylor and a minor, have been charged with battery, while a third person identified as Tenister Evans faces a misdemeanor obstruction of an officer charge, according to an incident report.

“They ripped out the braid out of her hair, all the way down to the root,” Davis explained.

Dawson shared that she was left with both physical and emotional scars from the attack. “They took my identity, I take pride in my hair, I can’t get certain hairstyles,” she said.

The lawsuit targets both the individuals who allegedly attacked Dawson and the company that owns the Popeyes franchise. Davis argued that the restaurant’s manager had a documented criminal past involving violent acts, highlighting Popeyes’ negligence in hiring this person without conducting proper background checks.

“This incident is an outrageous example of Popeyes’ failure to prioritize customer safety and well-being,” Davis declared. “We are resolute in our commitment to holding the restaurant accountable for their actions and seeking justice for our client.”

In response to the allegations, Popeyes issued a statement emphasizing its “absolute no tolerance for violence of any kind” in its restaurants. The franchisee of the Atlanta location confirmed the incident, terminating the employees involved. However, due to the ongoing lawsuit, Popeyes declined to provide further details.

The lawsuit seeks justice for Dawson and calls for Popeyes to be held accountable for allegedly failing to ensure customer safety and well-being. The incident has sparked concerns over the restaurant chain’s hiring practices and the need for thorough background checks to prevent similar situations in the future.
