RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – A new wave is building in Saudi Arabia, and it’s not just oil. The Kingdom is making a splash in the world of artificial surfing with the recent debut of a 215-meter Endless Surf pool, capable of generating waves up to 2.1 meters (approximately 7 feet) high. The facility, located within the Aquarabia water theme park in Qiddiya City, just outside Riyadh, promises a world-class surfing experience in the heart of the desert. This ambitious project signals Saudi Arabia’s growing investment in sports and recreation infrastructure, aiming to diversify its economy and attract both tourists and athletes.
The new surf pool is powered by Endless Surf technology, a system designed to create consistent, high-performance waves suitable for surfers of all skill levels. Adrena, the Saudi adventure park where the pool is located, describes the lagoon as “the largest surf pool in Saudi Arabia,” offering a unique environment for both learning to surf and honing advanced techniques. The pool’s design incorporates a canyon-style backdrop and a rock facade wall, aiming to enhance the overall surfing experience.
A Growing Trend in Artificial Waves
The rise of wave pools globally is gaining momentum, offering a controlled and consistent alternative to ocean surfing. Saudi Arabia is joining a growing list of locations embracing this technology. Surf Abu Dhabi, utilizing technology from the Kelly Slater Wave Company, is slated to host a World Surf League Championship Tour event in October, further solidifying the Middle East’s position in the surfing world. Construction has also recently begun on a wave pool in Bahrain, demonstrating a regional interest in the sport.
This isn’t Endless Surf’s only project in development. Another large-scale lagoon is planned for São Paulo, Brazil, within the Terras de São José residential community. According to a press release, the Praia do Terras facility will offer 40-second rides and a range of amenities for members of the private condominium club.
Aquarabia: More Than Just Waves
The Endless Surf pool is just one component of the larger Aquarabia water theme park, which is taking shape in the Tuwaiq Mountains. Aquarabia is positioned as a key entertainment asset within the broader Qiddiya City project, a massive development aimed at transforming the area into a major destination for entertainment, sports, and culture. The park will feature a total of 22 rides and attractions, with five being world-firsts, according to reports.
The park’s layout is divided into eight themed zones, each inspired by natural elements. Beyond surfing, Aquarabia will also include dry attractions and competition-ready sports facilities, catering to a wide range of interests. The 215-meter pool itself holds more than 10,000 cubic meters of water and features 32 programmable caissons to customize wave patterns for different skill levels.
Endless Surf Technology in Detail
Endless Surf’s technology allows for the creation of a variety of wave types, catering to both beginners and experienced surfers. The system utilizes pneumatic technology to generate waves that peel consistently across the lagoon, mimicking the experience of surfing ocean waves. The ability to adjust wave height, shape, and speed allows for a customizable experience, making it suitable for lessons, competitions, and recreational surfing.
The Saudi Arabian pool measures 180 meters by 73 meters, providing ample space for multiple surfers to ride simultaneously. This design aims to reduce wait times and enhance the overall flow of the surfing experience. The integration of the canyon-style backdrop and rock facade is intended to create a visually appealing and immersive environment.
Looking Ahead
While an official grand opening date for the Saudi Arabian surf pool has not yet been announced, the project represents a significant step in the Kingdom’s efforts to diversify its entertainment offerings and attract international attention. The development of Aquarabia and the Endless Surf pool aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader Vision 2030 plan, which aims to reduce the country’s reliance on oil and promote economic diversification. Further updates on the park’s progress and opening date are expected in the coming months.
The growing popularity of wave pools worldwide suggests a continued expansion of this technology, offering accessible and consistent surfing opportunities to a wider audience. As more facilities like the one in Saudi Arabia reach online, the future of surfing may well extend beyond the ocean’s shores.
