China denies the very existence of the tragic event which would have cost the lives of an entire crew. According to a report from the British secret services, revealed by the Dailymail last Tuesday, a Chinese nuclear submarine was caught in the trap of its own defense system, itself intended to trap British submarine ships in the Yellow Sea, on August 21.

In total, 55 crew members, including 22 officers, 7 cadets, 9 non-commissioned officers and 17 sailors, died in the incident, details the British daily. Among the victims was the captain, Colonel Xue Yong-Peng. All are believed to have died following a failure of the plane’s oxygen systems, which poisoned the crew.

Caught in his own trap

“We believe the death was caused by hypoxia due to a system failure on the submarine. The submarine struck a chain and anchor used by the Chinese navy to trap American and allied submarines,” said the report cited by the Dailymail.

This information is denied outright by Beijing, while on the Taiwan side, the authorities remain cautious and claim not to be able to confirm this information, according to The echoes. The shipwreck is believed to have taken place in the waters of the Chinese province of Shandong, not far from Shanghai.
