The Ministries of Health of the Nation and the City of Buenos Aires issued an epidemiological alert for a case of measles from Barcelona, Spain. The patient is a 6-year-old boy who was not vaccinated and has temporary residence in the Capital.

In the ministry’s statement, it was reported that a private health center notified the National Surveillance System about a case of febrile exanthematous illness (EFE) suspected of measles on February 6.

On that date, “the epidemiological investigation and control actions” and the analysis of the results of the study carried out in a private laboratory that tested positive began. On February 7, the National Reference Laboratory ANLIS-Malbrán “received the samples and confirmed the infection by detecting the viral genome of the measles virus” in a urine analysis. Results are still awaited to determine the genotype of the virus.

The patient entered the country on January 27, as confirmed by the ministry. Between the 29th and 30th, the first symptoms began: fever, cough, rhinitis, conjunctivitis and Koplic spots. On January 31, he developed rashes on his cheeks and within three days, the rashes spread all over his body.

The baby was transferred to a private center on February 4 and both the patient and his parents were isolated. “Due to good general condition, home isolation and clinical control by the institution were indicated,” the medical report stated.

The ministry confirmed that the patient “is progressing favorably without requiring hospitalization and continues under clinical follow-up.”
