Justice Department Removes Photos, Including Trump Image, From Epstein File Release
The Justice Department quietly removed 16 photos from a public database of Epstein investigation materials, sparking questions about transparency and potential cover-ups.
- A photo depicting a credenza in Epstein’s New York home, with an open drawer containing images – including one of Donald Trump – was among those removed.
- Twelve of the removed photos showed the infamous massage room within Epstein’s mansion,a location central to allegations of sexual assault.
- The Justice Department has not publicly explained the removal of the images, fueling speculation and criticism from Democrats.
- The released files, mandated by a recent law, have been largely described as anticlimactic, offering little new insight into epstein’s network.
The Justice Department removed a total of 16 photos on December 20 from the website created to house the files. The removed images included a photograph of a credenza in Epstein’s New York home, with an open drawer revealing other photos, at least one of which featured Donald Trump. The department has not explained why the images were taken down, and a spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
Democrats on the House Oversight Committee quickly reacted to the missing Trump photo, reposting it on social media and questioning Attorney-general Pam Bondi about its removal. “What else is being covered up?” the committee’s post asked. “We need transparency for the American public.”
Twelve of the other removed photos depicted the massage room on the third floor of Epstein’s New York mansion. Investigators have stated that many of Epstein’s sexual assaults occurred in this room, located down the hall from his bedroom, with some assaults involving teenage victims. the room was equipped with lubricants and a silver ball and chain, among other items.
The removed massage room images featured paintings and photographs of nude women, some with their faces redacted. Though, other images and artwork depicting nude women remained on the site, as did some photos of the massage room itself – including those containing nude imagery.
The missing photos were part of a larger collection of materials released by the Trump governance following the passage of a law in November. This law mandated the justice Department to disclose all files related to Epstein, a convicted sex offender who died by suicide in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of trafficking minors.
Despite expectations, the released files – comprising thousands of photographs and investigative documents – have been largely considered underwhelming. they have added little to the public’s understanding of Epstein’s conduct or his connections to wealthy and powerful individuals.
Donald Trump has remained uncharacteristically silent regarding the released files, which contained more material about his political opponent, former President Bill Clinton, than about him. The Justice Department has indicated that further disclosures from the Epstein files are expected in the coming weeks.
On December 20, the department released a second set of files, including transcripts from closed-door grand jury proceedings related to the federal investigations into Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell. These documents, while previously unpublished, offered little new information regarding the cases.
