The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has explained that he maintains the number of ministries and the parity that already existed. He highlights the “high political profile” of the new Executive to “provide stability” to the current legislature. In total he will have 22 ministries, of which 12 will be led by women. Sánchez has appointed María Jesús Montero as fourth vice president, who remains head of the Treasury. Félix Bolaños will continue to be key in this new stage after he is Minister of the Presidency and now Minister of Justice. Pilar Alegría will be the new Government spokesperson.

Sumar will be represented in five portfolios, while Podemos is left without representation in the coalition Executive. Ana Redondo García will occupy the Equality portfolio.

Likewise, Sánchez has chosen the former Canary Islands president Ángel Víctor Torres to lead the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, and the former mayor of Barcelona Jordi Hereu to occupy the Ministry of Industry.

Podemos leader Ione Belarra has called it a “serious political mistake” to exclude Podemos from Sumar’s ministries. “Today the decision of Pedro Sánchez and Yolanda Díaz to veto Podemos in the government is confirmed. A decision not only unfair but above all a serious political error,” she said.
