Erdogan visits Iraq for the first time in 12 years

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan headed to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on an official visit, his first since 2011.

According to Anatolia News Agency, “During his one-day visit, President Erdogan will meet with his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Latif Rashid and Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani in the capital, Baghdad. Erdogan is scheduled to hold a press conference with the Iraqi Prime Minister, and then they will sign a series of Bilateral agreements between the two countries.”

According to the agency, “After completing his meetings in the capital, Baghdad, President Erdogan, accompanied by his delegation, will head to the city of Erbil.”

Erdogan is accompanied on his visit to Iraq by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan, Defense Yaşar Guler, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, Trade Omar Bolat, Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Oraloglu, Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli, Energy and Natural Resources Alp Arslan Bayraktar, Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Cajer, and President Erdogan is also accompanied by, Head of the Turkish Presidency’s Communications Department, Fahrettin Altun, and Presidential Advisor for Foreign and Security Policies Akif Chagatay Kilic.

This is the Turkish President’s first visit to Baghdad as President of the Republic, as his previous visit was when he was Prime Minister in March 2011.

Erdogan had commented on this visit earlier, saying, “It will be significantly different, and during it a large number of files will be discussed, including energy, transportation, water, combating terrorism, and bilateral relations.”
