A San Antonio man who survived a controversial shooting by a former police officer in 2022 was arrested Thursday for allegedly burglarizing the home of the mother of his child. Erik Cantu, 20, is now facing his sixth arrest, less than a month after being sentenced to eight years of probation for a previous probation violation. The incident underscores a continuing pattern of legal troubles for Cantu, who gained national attention following the shooting incident at a McDonald’s restaurant.
Details of the Alleged Burglary
According to an affidavit, Cantu allegedly stole a tablet belonging to Emily Proulx, with whom he shares a child. Following the alleged theft, Proulx reported receiving messages from her friends via her tablet, followed by direct calls and messages from Cantu himself. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Cantu outside Proulx’s front door, and a notification alerted her that the tablet was leaving her apartment and traveling towards his residence.
A witness further corroborated the account, reporting they saw Cantu on Proulx’s second-floor patio prior to the reported burglary of habitation. Authorities have charged Cantu accordingly.
A History of Legal Issues
This latest arrest comes on the heels of Cantu’s sentencing last month for violating his probation. The incident also revisits the highly publicized 2022 shooting. Proulx was a passenger in Cantu’s vehicle when then-San Antonio Police Department officer James Brennand shot the then-17-year-old Cantu in a McDonald’s parking lot. Brennand was subsequently fired and indicted on charges of aggravated assault.
Notably, Proulx herself was arrested in June 2023 on a separate theft charge, unrelated to the current incident.
The case continues to draw attention, raising questions about the ongoing challenges faced by Cantu and the complexities surrounding the initial shooting incident.
