AAt the age of 5, Antônio Cerveira was elected best reader at the Manuel de Boaventura Municipal Library, in Esposende. In total, the child requested 118 books this year.
The boy was one of 62 readers and 10 institutions who distinguished themselves in the ‘Readers’ Christmas’ initiative last December 12th.
«With an ever-growing demand – from 3,615 loans in 2008 to 12,649 in 2024 (until 10 December, including bibliomobiles and beach libraries) – the home loan service of the Municipal Library has many dozens of regular readers, and this distinction is based on a minimum number of 30 books and other required materials,” underlines the Municipality in a statement.
In this sense, and given the high number of readers who requested more than 30 books this year, the municipal librarian, Luísa Leite, clarified that the category criterion was chosen: Children, Adults and Institutions.
As for Children, Antônio Cerveira, 5 years old, was the best reader, with 118 loans. In second place Guilherme Briote, 8 years old, with 95 requests, and in third place Beatriz Arezes, 12 years old, with 81 requests.
In the Adult category, Antônio Carlos da Silva took the podium, with 114 books requested. Followed by Maria Jacinta Abreu, with 93 loans, and Alda Viana, with 85 requests.
Finally, the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Fão/Jardim de Infância came first among the Institutions, with 122 requests, while the ACARF Association, in Forjães, requested 91 books. For its part, the Marinhas Youth Social Center has granted 77 loans.
In total, the three best readers were Antônio Cerveira, António Carlos da Silva and Guilherme Briote.
Presenting the offers – municipal publications and children’s editions – and the best reader certificates were the mayor Guilherme Emílio, as well as the deputy Sérgio Mano, the secretary of Culture, Rui Losa, and the secretary of Education, Alexandra Vilar.
The mayor congratulated all the winners, underlining the “extraordinary” record of many readers.
“Reading is not just acquiring knowledge, it is traveling to other places without moving, it is talking to authors without knowing them, living an infinite number of stories without ceasing to live our history,” underlined Guilherme Emílio.
The official also stated that the Municipality has taken decisive steps towards the creation of the Casa-Museu Manuel de Boaventura, a project that “will provide greater knowledge of the writer Esposense, his work and the experiences of the time in the house located in the place of Susão, in Palmeira de Faro”.
