Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland has been named the 2025 BBC Sports Personality of the Year, a testament to his remarkable season and career achievements. The golfer secured the honor on December 19th (Korean time) after a year highlighted by a career grand slam and a pivotal role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory.
A Grand Slam Years in the Making
McIlroy’s victory completes a historic feat, placing him among golf’s elite.
- McIlroy achieved a career grand slam by winning the Masters Tournament in April.
- He also secured victories at the PGA Tour Players Championship, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and DP World Tour Island Open.
- This is the third time a golfer has received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
- McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood were jointly named Team of the Year for their Ryder Cup success.
For years, the Masters Tournament eluded McIlroy, despite winning the U.S. Open, Open Championship, and PGA Championship by 2014. However, his triumph at Augusta National last April cemented his place in golfing history, making him only the sixth player ever to complete the career grand slam. Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods (USA), and Gary Player (South Africa) are the other golfers to achieve this prestigious feat.
Dominance Beyond the Majors
McIlroy’s success wasn’t limited to the four major championships. He also claimed victories at the PGA Tour Players Championship, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the DP World Tour Island Open. Adding to his impressive year, McIlroy secured his 7th DP World Tour Race to Dubai title, further solidifying his dominance in the sport.
“I want to congratulate all the nominees. I know how much hard work and dedication it takes to get to this point. It’s an honor just to be nominated together,” McIlroy said. He also reflected on the significance of the award, adding, “This is an awards ceremony I always watched on TV when I was a kid. It was a moment I always looked forward to before Christmas. It’s an honor to hold the trophy.”
Ryder Cup Glory and Team Recognition
McIlroy’s contributions extended beyond individual accolades. He was also recognized as part of the Team of the Year alongside Tommy Fleetwood (England). The European duo played a crucial role in the team’s victory over the United States in the Ryder Cup.
The England national football team, champions of the Women’s Euro 2025, and the England Women’s Rugby World Cup winners were also contenders for the Team of the Year award.
In other awards presented, Armond Duplantis (Sweden) was named World Sports Star of the Year, and Thierry Henry (France) received the Achievement Award.
McIlroy joins Dai Rees (Wales), who won in 1957, and Nick Faldo (England), who was honored in 1989, as the third golfer to receive the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. This marks the third time a sportsperson from Northern Ireland has claimed the title.
