Roller Hockey. Esteban Ábalos has been confirmed as the head coach of the Argentine national team’s under-19 squad, building on his role as technical advisor during the recent Pan American Games where Argentina claimed the championship after defeating Chile. We recently had the chance to speak with the former hockey player, who also has experience with La Lepra and Benfica of Portugal.
A Focus on Asunción and Beyond
Esteban Ábalos recently enjoyed a few days of vacation but is now focused and eager to discuss his new role.
-Esteban, will you continue coaching the first team at Atlético Club San Martín, or will your focus be solely on the U-19 national roller hockey team?
-No, I will continue coaching the Pre-Infant, Infant, and Cadet categories. I will also assist with the seniors when possible, but Diego Guerrero will be the head coach of the senior team, and I will collaborate with him when not involved with the national team.
-What are the goals and objectives with the national team?
The goal for Argentina is always to win. It won’t be easy, as other teams are strong competitors and are also well-prepared for the upcoming World Cup. However, we have a lot of potential, a very talented group of players, and a bright future with this team.
-When did you begin working with the team?
-Work began after the Pan American Games, but our first official concentration will be at the Vendimia de Mendoza tournament.
-Was it a difficult process to select the members of your national team?
-It was very challenging, but that’s a good sign. There are many talented players with great potential, and new players are constantly emerging.
