The grandson of the late Russian revolutionary leader Len Trostki and guardian of his legacy, Esteban Volkovdied in Mexico City at age 97 old.
“Our director, companion and friend, Mr. Esteban Volkov, has departed from this world at the age of 97,” the Leon Trotsky House Museum, which Volkov founded and directed until a few years ago, said on Facebook on Saturday.
The museum is housed in the house in Mexico City where Trotsky lived until his assassination on August 21, 1940. The Russian leader had arrived in exile in Mexico in January 1937.
The venue highlighted that since Trotsky’s assassination, Volkov “He took on the most important task of his life: the defense of his grandfather’s ideas and trajectory”.
Volkov was born in the Ukraine in 1926 and arrived in Mexico at the age of 13. thanks to the trades of Trotsky himself, according to the newspaper La Jornada.
His mother Zinaida -Trotsky’s daughter- committed suicide in Paris while fleeing Isif Stalin’s regime and her father was sent to a gulag in the 1930s.
He was recognized in Mexico as the “last living witness to the assassination” of the Russian leader. In an interview with the BBC he recalled the day the Russian leader was assassinated.
He narrated that he was returning from school when he saw a police car outside the house where he lived with Trotsky, whom he saw on the bloody floor after being attacked by the Stalinist agent. Ramon Mercader.
After the crime, Volkov continued to live in Mexico, where studied chemistry and founded in 1990 the museum named after his grandfather, located in the popular neighborhood of Coyoacn.
