The American website “Live Science” has made a groundbreaking revelation about the total number of animals that have existed on Earth since the beginning of time. The calculation, described as a “difficult issue,” has shed light on the sheer magnitude of animal life on our planet.

The Red List of Threatened Species has reported that scientists have identified the equivalent of 2.16 million animal species by 2022. However, it has been pointed out that there are several types of duplicate animals, documented by more than one scientist, potentially inflating the number by up to 20%. This means that the real number of known animal species may be closer to 1.7 million.

Further research has been able to determine the final number of animals that have existed since ancient times until today. The number has reached about 8.7 million species of eukaryotes, while animals constitute about 7.7 million species of them.

The implications of these findings are staggering. Studies indicate that, in addition to the 8 billion people currently inhabiting Earth, we share the planet with an estimated 130 billion other mammals, up to 428 billion birds, 3.5 trillion fish, and a mind-boggling 10 quintillion insects.

This new information has sparked a renewed interest in the diversity and abundance of animal life on Earth, provoking awe and wonder at the sheer scale of nature’s creations. The implications for conservation and environmental protection are also significant, as we come to appreciate the staggering number of species that call Earth their home.
