Tow will present his next album, ‘Estopia’ (will be published in March) and celebrate his 25 years of career. “We have been passing screens, as in the Shinovi“explains David from the car that takes him and his brother José to present an award at the award ceremony. Kings League.

In the video for “El día que tú te marches” they appear writing a song. Do they compose and play the guitar with the same enthusiasm as 25 years ago?

David: Yes, with the same enthusiasm and with the same fear. Because facing the blank page and having a song come out with the spirit that we want to give it, is very gratifying, it is success.

Is it more successful to write a good song or play in front of 20,000 people?

David: I guess one thing is a consequence of the other. But for us, what fills us with pride and satisfaction, as the Emeritus, is to be able to continue being fresh and with a playful mind. But it is also a fear, and especially now that we are going to do such a heavy tour.

José: We had never played in buildings as big as the Metropolitan of Madrid and the Barcelona Olympic and having sold out the tickets in such a short time.

There you have also missed the screen.

David: We weren’t expecting it, honestly.

José: We have noticed the affection of the public.

David: Yes, because when someone disappears like us, who spend long periods composing, we always have the feeling that someone has taken our place or whatever. And then when we return, we are always surprised by the love we receive.

José: With each album it seems that new kids of the time are added. And that’s very cool. We threatened not to separate.

“An album full of rumbas”

The video is full of references to his career: the Seat Panda, the pig from “Destrangis”, the astronaut from “Rumba el unknown”. They have even recovered Chonchi Heredia, who sang backing vocals for them in their first songs. Nostalgia?

David: We have become nostalgic, of course. Getting Chonchi back has been a bit of a declaration of intent. It’s going to be a very rumba-heavy album, but there will also be rock…

José: We play many colors. We’ve even gotten into a crooner mode.

They have changed the smoking tuxedo for the dress tuxedo.

David: Yes, a song with a tuxedo, another that smells like a popular party churro, there is a ranchera…

José: Later people will say that that’s not a ranchera.

David: Well, we add a little ska to it, because ska can handle everything.

Can you make rumba or transgressive rock without the class consciousness of the production line, the family bar or the park bench?

David: When you do it without class consciousness you end up with a churro without a soul. Normally, when you do things without heart it usually turns out badly.

Estopa has always vindicated its references: La Polla, Sabina, Los Chichos, Albert Pla… Who will vindicate you?

David: It is the law that anyone who feels influenced says it. We love to pay tribute to our references, because without them we would not be here. It is up to the referenced person to cry out loud and admit…

Jose: Their energy sources.

David: Some do it and some don’t, that’s up to them.

“We are like waiters 24 hours a day”

Do they feel more loved or more respected?

David: Dearest.

José: Respect, they don’t respect us much. They see us on the street and immediately ‘hey, what’s happening’. People treat us like their colleagues.

David: I prefer to be treated with affection than with respect, honestly.

One of the few things that I think the majority of the country agrees on is that the Muñoz brothers seem quite nice. What a responsibility…

David: Yes, Uncle Ben already said it: with great power comes great responsibility. But sometimes it’s a shitty responsibility because you can’t screw it up.

Jose: Well, we don’t have to save the world either. We are like 24-hour waiters, who have to have good customer service.

David: Instead of cut, well photo there, photo there.

There are several videos of him going up to festival stages, beach bars, and booths. It’s like Bill Murray’s sudden appearance at a college party or taking a cake from a guy at a bar.

David: “Don’t tell it, they won’t believe you,” he says. I swear I copied that joke. Bill Murray is a model of exposing yourself to life and coming out victorious no matter what you say, the bastard. We are a bit Bill Murray.

Jose: Or him Inspector Gadget.

“Sometimes we feel impostor syndrome”

Inspector Gadget why?

David: because he made things a little messy. He would bend down and put a bullet over him, he had his niece and the dog to get him out of trouble… Sometimes we don’t explain the things that happen to us.

You placed the first model because a girlfriend of yours went to the same pool as one of EMI. Are they referring to that?

José: Yes, that was a historical coincidence.

David: Our career has been a totally wonderful whirlwind.

José: Having been in the right place at the right time.

But that’s not enough. You also have to know how to make songs.

David: But many factors have to come into play. They don’t succeed only with songs. I know motherfuckers who make songs that make us feel like shit, but no one listens to them.

Do you feel imposter syndrome?

Jose: Sometimes yes, we wonder what we are doing here. We are not guitarists, guitarists, nor singers, singers…

David: What we are are composers.

“But how long is life if it is sad and time stops.” What a phrase. She was in his first model.

David: There are times when things are comical, other times tragicomic and other times just tragic. And poetry will always be in our minds. We are fans of the great poets of ’98.

(both laugh at the same time).

David: we like to squeeze language, invent stories, play with irony. We have listened a lot to La Polla, who were the kings of sarcasm. We have listened to Sabina a lot, who is the best storyteller. To Robe, whatever he says gives you goosebumps. To the Chichos, your balls dropped… We tried to copy them.

Compared to some lyrics that are heard now in Los 40, what you sang about joints and slits in your skirt seems like something for children.

David: So you see. Sometimes they tell us ‘now you couldn’t sing about the slit in your skirt’. Damn, because you haven’t heard the one about las pepas or despacito… Puritanism isn’t going anywhere, so we’re not going to complain about the lyrics now but well… bad times for lyrics.

“Our children are proud of their parents’ songs”

Is it true that they censored themselves with the song “El del medio de los Chichos”

David: Of course, because we made that song to sing ourselves. And when it was selected for the album someone told us ‘hey, maybe when Jero’s son hears it…’. We gave it a necessary turn, although she lost because the original was harder. What remained was the bandage on the wound.

Now that you are also parents, do you still put on bandages?

David: No, our children are proud of their parents’ songs. They know that the songs are not all true. It’s like thinking Bill Murray is a real ghostbuster.

Well, sometimes with Bill Murray it’s hard to differentiate the person and the character.

David: Us too. Acting is a pain and takes work. Being something you are not is a stress. That’s why we show ourselves as we are without playing any role.

25 years ago fame came almost suddenly. Did they lose their foot?

David: What’s up. We had a lot of fun. It was fun when people asked you for autographs on the street.

José: At first we were even embarrassed when they asked us for autographs.

David: Now it is true that we go anywhere, walking through Barcelona or Madrid or going to the Barça field, we cannot go normally, we cannot stick our fingers in our noses.

José: But we have learned to live with that.
