The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) announced the extension of the license granted by the Central Bank of Cuba to act in the national territory as a non-financial entity, which allows it to act as a provider of new payment services through the operation and management of the Transfermóvil platform.

For this purpose, Resolution 32/2023, published in the Official Gazette of Cuba, will allow ETECSA to manage through the MiTransfer Exchange the purchases of goods and services in businesses where Transfermóvil is enabled as a means of payment, without the need for a card. banking.

In addition, a new functionality of the application will be to recharge the CUP account of the Stock Exchange through a cash deposit at the Exchange Houses (Cadeca).

These measures will allow subscribers of the cellular network, whether legal entities or individuals, to interact with their bank accounts and pay public services, as well as make payments in the country’s electronic commerce environment and manage telecommunications services, indicates the note from ETECSA on its official website.

According to directors of the entity, with the activation of the MiTransfer Exchange, the possibility of having a virtual wallet in which to deposit money without being banked, that is, without having an account in Bandec, BPA or Banco Metropolitano, opens up.

The text does not specify when the new functionalities of the application will be available, although it does indicate that the decision is adopted in line with the digital transformation process in which the country is immersed.

This update joins the possibility offered as of December to acquire stamp stamps digitally through Transfermóvil, one of the solutions of the Cuban authorities to the shortage of stamps printed on the island.

Meanwhile, users of the ETECSA mobile network have reported in recent weeks the worsening of communications in the country, both for calls and to access the Internet through mobile data.

However, sources familiar with the matter close to Cuba News 360consider that the expansion of Transfermóvil services should not be the cause behind the intermittency of the data network service since this application works through a service protocol that includes messaging and not data.
