The EU Commission has advocated a significant reduction in the use of pesticides. However, a corresponding law does not find a majority in the EU Parliament.

Strasbourg.

The plan to significantly reduce the use of weed and pest killers in the EU to protect the environment has failed in the European Parliament. In a vote on Wednesday in Strasbourg, there was no majority for a common position on the relevant plans. A request to renegotiate the law in the responsible committee was also rejected. The project is therefore on hold for now.

Farmers in the EU should actually significantly limit the use of pesticides in the coming years. This was what the EU Commission suggested. This was intended, among other things, to combat the extinction of species. It is unlikely that the law will be implemented in the near future. The MP Sarah Wiener, who was responsible for negotiating the law, spoke of a victory for the pesticide industry.

Some of the requirements went too far for the Christian Democrats, among others – they criticized bans on farmers, for example. The Social Democratic MP Delara Burkhardt, however, rejected a weaker plan because she wanted stricter rules for farmers. CDU MP Peter Liese said after the vote that there was now a chance to develop a sensible concept in the next legislative period. There are EU elections coming up next summer.

The Green MP Jutta Paulus spoke of a law that was holed beyond recognition. It is a black day for agriculture. Her FDP counterpart Jan-Christoph Oetjen sees it completely differently. He welcomed the fact that the “catastrophic ban proposals” did not find a majority. (dpa)
