EU Foreign Policy Chief Warns of Repercussions of Potential Israeli Attack on Rafah
The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has issued a warning regarding the potential consequences of an Israeli attack on the Rafah neighborhood in Gaza. In a tweet, Borrell stated, “I reiterate the warning issued by several EU Member States that the Israeli attack on Rafah would lead to an unspeakable humanitarian catastrophe and serious tensions with Egypt.”
The conflict escalated following Israeli air strikes that killed 17 people in Rafah overnight. Over a million Palestinians have reportedly gathered in the border city, fearing a full-scale assault. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has confirmed the order to evacuate Rafah residents and destroy four Hamas battalions stationed in the area.
Borrell emphasized the need for de-escalation and urged the resumption of negotiations to free hostages and end the conflict peacefully.
