TikTok Lite, the new less technically demanding application from the Chinese social media giant, tempts users with economic payments to browse its interior and get new users and downloads. But this policy could have its days numbered in Europe. The EU is threatening to temporarily cancel this feature from Thursday this week for failing to provide a satisfactory response to regulators’ concerns about its impact on mental health, especially that of younger people.
The European Commission has launched an investigation, under the Digital Services Act (DSA), because the Chinese company had not submitted a risk assessment report before the launch of the application, something to which is required due to the high number of users it has in the EU. It is further noted that this is “particularly concerning for children, given the alleged absence of effective age verification mechanisms on TikTok.”
Indeed, TikTok Lite offers financial rewards to users who use the application. However, these are limited exclusively to those of legal age. To access them, as ABC has verified, it is necessary to share a ‘selfie’ image with an identity card, use facial scanning or verify a credit card.
The EU asked the application for information about this system on April 17 and gave it one day to share the response, which did not arrive. Now it has given a new deadline that meets tomorrow, the 23rd, to show the risk analysis and until May 3 to share more requested data. If TikTok does not comply with the order, the Commission may impose fines on the company of up to 1% of the total annual revenue or global turnover and periodic sanctions of up to 5% of the provider’s average daily revenue. or global annual turnover.
The Commission has also informed TikTok of its intention to impose provisional measures consisting of the suspension of the Lite rewards program in the EU pending the assessment of its security. The suspension “could be renewed if necessary and proportionate.”
