At the Sanremo 2020 Festival in the Youth Section with Tsunami the Eugenio in Via di Gioia they won the Critics’ Prize but did not convince the Opinion Jury. Their stay on stage lasted less than 7 minutes (“A real record never before”, they told them shortly after the elimination) and were beaten, in the direct confrontation, by Tecla Insolia and her “March 8th”. The band never stopped between albums (the last dates back to 2019) and tours before the pandemic broke out. Then the dazzling idea.
Originally from Turin, the “Eugenii” – as they are called by the fans – have posted on Instagram a small clip of 1 minute and 35 seconds that contains the alternative acronym to Eurovision 2022, which will be held on 10-12 and 14 May just in Torino. The capital in fact beat Milan and Bologna in the final photo finish. The images and words of the video – which immediately went viral – tell not only the Italian clichés but also the Turin ones; climax of the song is a heartfelt appeal to Chiara Ferragni.
But let’s proceed in order. On Instagram the caption is clear and clear: “Eurovision 2022 in Turin. Let’s go get Eurovision, we play at home ”. The beginning is marked by dance music and the “one-two-three” followed by the real catchphrase: One Maneskin Eurovision Italy, everybody want to see mafia pizza e mandolì, One Maneskin Eurovision Italy, everybody want to see how is beautiful Turin. And one more list of Turin delicacies: Here is the mole, here was the King, pannacotta with grissini, agnolotti del plin; to follow the wet caôda, the bicerin but you also touch football with the you and Turin, the Holy Shroud, the smog, the Parco del Valentino with an image of an anti-drug raid.
The Eugenii, however, also underline the strengths of the other cities: I know that Rome is bigger, there is water in Venice, Milano is richer and Torino is crazy. “Everyone wants to see” even Fiat cars, trams, i toret, the Po, i gianduiotti and the tomini. An important appeal could not be missing: Ferragni come to visit Musei Egizi cause we want be famous like Uffizi. And away the roundup of famous Turin: Cavour, Umberto Stocky, Oscar Farinetti, Lapo Elkann, the disc jockey Gabry Ponte and the actress and singer Carla Bruni, Alessandro Barbero, Fred Buscaglione, Rita Levi Montalcini and finally Rita Pavone.
Intrigued, I immediately contacted Eugenio Cesaro, the frontman of the band, who revealed to us: “It all started last March, when for the Sanremo Final the The Jackal they proposed us for their podcast to read the ranking of the Festival, singing and playing. An experiment that they really liked. We replicated it when i Maneskin Eurovision also won. So when last week they made Turin official as their chosen city, we couldn’t not close the trilogy: we took the opportunity to tell our Turin for better or for worse, with all the traditional things of our city. We would like this song to go beyond national borders ”. The question everyone asks is: did Chiara Ferragni call you? “Maybe he will this afternoon (bursts out laughing, at)”.
So gentlemen of the EBU – the organizing body of the event – you just have to adopt and make yours the Hymn of Eugenio in Via di Gioia.
