Around the performance hall, the police were escorting demonstrators towards the numerous trucks present, a rather unusual sight in the Scandinavian country.

More than a hundred demonstrators waved flags to the rhythm of the “Free Palestine” slogan. Some wore a keffiyeh, sometimes wrapped around their face.

“It feels like they have a license to be a little more aggressive than usual,” Sarah, a 45-year-old resident of Malmö, told AFP. “I’ve never seen that”.

The police, who declared that they had used tear gas, tried to push the demonstrators back to a square where pro-Palestinian rallies had been authorized, with no one present.

“They sprayed tear gas in my face, they pushed me,” Sara Bo, 26, told AFP, showing her red eyes.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was among them. She and members of her group sat in a circle, surrounded by police.

In the afternoon, around 5,000 people marched peacefully through the city, where the majority of Sweden’s population is of Palestinian origin, to protest Israel’s participation in the music competition, an annual European pop gathering aimed at to be non-political.
