According to a poll conducted for the left-liberal newspaper, Italians are most worried about security, whether it is public safety or their personal safety.
Almost every fourth Italian considers crime and migration to be the main problems at the moment. The rate of concern about security is now the highest since the coronavirus epidemic. In the past, health protection was considered the most important thing.
Currently, 24 percent of Italians believe that crime and immigration cause them the greatest fear, compared to 15 percent last year. Most right-wing voters and 45 to 64-year-olds are concerned about crime and migration – despite more than sixty percent fewer migrants arriving this year than last year.
The analysis accompanying the survey points out that the Italians did not mention wars in the first place.
According to another survey published by the Diocese of Rome, while in 1990 the proportion of settled immigrants was one percent of the Italian population, today it exceeds 8.7 percent. This corresponds to 5.1 million immigrants in Italy of 57 million. Twenty-nine percent of them are between 14 and 34 years old.
In Lombardy in the north, with a population of ten million, immigrants living and working there correspond to twelve percent of the population, in the southern province of Puglia, with a population of slightly less than four million, the proportion of settled immigrants is 3.8 percent.
There are brutal murders in the country every week
A Pakistani man attacked and raped a fourteen-year-old girl waiting at a bus stop in the city of Bolzano on Friday evening. The forty-year-old man with a criminal record was taken into custody.
In Bergamo, on the night of Sunday, an eighteen-year-old girl was killed by her Indian neighbor of the same age with eleven stab wounds.
The leader of the League party, Matteo Salvini, asked on his social media page how the courts will decide: is the man arrested in Bolzano really considered a “valuable source of labor” who was worth being allowed into Italy?
Salvini noted that there is a court case against him for stopping illegal migration, and in fifty-four days it will be known whether he will be convicted or acquitted.
