BarcelonaThe Galician footballer Luis Suárez Miramontes, football legend and Ballon d’Or winner, died this Sunday at the age of 88, as announced by Inter Milan, the club for which he played and trained for years, after leaving the Barça by the back door.

Suárez (La Coruña, 1935) arrived in Barcelona at the age of 20 to play for Espanya Insustrial, a team that acted as a subsidiary of Barça, and made his debut a year later with the Blaugrana first team, a club where he would play for seven seasons, winning six titles: two Leagues, two Cups of the Generalísimo and two Cups of Fairs. His last game for Blaugrana was the 1961 European Cup final, in which Barça lost 2-3 to Benfica in Bern.

He then arrived in Milan to play for Inter in the 1961/1962 season and ended up staying in the city until the end of his days. The footballer became the first Spaniard to win a Ballon d’Or, in 1960, a feat that would not be repeated until Alexia Putellas won the two golden spheres in 2021 and 2022.
