The Pontine Islands are priority areas for Mediterranean cetacean populations
Greenpeace’s “C’è di mezzo il mare” expedition stopped at the Pontine islands to monitor the cetaceans that populate these waters, together with the researchers from Oceanomare Delphis, using visual (cameras and drones) and acoustic ( hydrophones). The Pontine islands are internationally recognized as priority areas for Mediterranean cetacean populations. To hear their cries, the researchers use a hydrophone, a microphone capable of recording sounds underwater. Sperm whales emit clicks, high-frequency sounds, useful for scanning the seabed or locating hunting prey. Dolphins, on the other hand, also emit whistles for communication within the group.
