Never two without three. Colombian police announced on Friday the arrest, on April 8, of former Colombian footballer Diego Leon Osorio in a drug trafficking case. He was about to board a flight to Madrid from Rionegro, a town near Medellín, “with 1,849 grams of cocaine”, police said in a press release.

At the airport, authorities arrested him and found he was carrying the drugs hidden in four pairs of sneakers. The police did not formalize his arrest until Friday, after the release to the press of a video on which Osario appears handcuffed next to a police officer.

He was coming out of five years of house arrest for the same reasons

A scenario that tends to repeat itself, since it is the third time since 2002 that the 52-year-old former footballer has been caught by the police for similar facts. He had already been arrested in 2002 while transporting a large quantity of cocaine in Miami, and was then released after posting bail. In 2016 he was arrested again in Medellin and placed under house arrest for five years.

Osario, a former defender, had a very honest career in the Colombian championship, which he won twice in the jersey of Atletico Nacional, and shared the jersey of the national team in the 1990s, alongside in particular Carlos Valderrama and Rene Higuita.

This is not the first time that a footballer from the country that produces the most cocaine in the world finds himself in the net of justice for drug trafficking. In 2021, former Colombian football star Anthony de Avila was arrested for drug trafficking in Naples. The previous year, John Viafara, champion of the Libertadores de Caldas, was extradited to the United States for having participated in a shipment of drugs to that country. Luis Alfonso “Bendito” Fajardo and Wilson Pérez also faced similar legal troubles.

In general, it is not uncommon to see former footballers entangled in this kind of business once they hang up their boots. Quite recently, former OM player Koke or Martiniquais Jean-Manuel Nedra were bothered by the courts in similar cases.
