Former Virginia Football Star Jahmal edrine Arrested, Charged with Rape and Abduction
the University of virginia football program has been shaken by the arrest of former wide receiver Jahmal Edrine, who faces serious felony charges of rape and abduction. Edrine, 22, was taken into custody Thursday following a months-long inquiry initiated by the Albemarle County Police Department on August 25th, stemming from a reported sexual assault the previous day.
The investigation culminated in indictments returned by a grand jury on February 2nd, leading to Edrine’s arrest and subsequent detention without bond at the albemarle-Charlottesville Regional jail. Authorities have confirmed the investigation remains active and ongoing.
The University of Virginia acknowledged the arrest and confirmed Edrine is no longer enrolled at the institution. In a statement provided to Wahoos247, Brian Coy, the university’s chief communications officer and spokesperson, stated the university is cooperating fully with law enforcement while respecting federal student privacy regulations that limit further comment.
Edrine joined the Cavaliers ahead of the 2024 season after transferring from Purdue. He quickly became a key offensive contributor, finishing the season as the team’s second-leading receiver with 46 receptions for 564 yards and one touchdown. His arrival was anticipated to bolster Virginia’s offense, which ultimately achieved a program-record 11 wins before a narrow overtime loss to Duke in the ACC Championship Game.
Prior to his time at Virginia, Edrine’s collegiate career included stints at Florida Atlantic (2021-2022) and Purdue (2023-2024). A season-ending injury sustained during fall training camp in 2023 sidelined him for the entirety of that year. Throughout his career at FAU and Purdue, Edrine amassed a total of 63 receptions before arriving in Charlottesville.
The charges against Edrine represent a important development in the case and raise serious concerns within the university community and beyond. Further updates will be provided as the legal process unfolds.
