Massive Explosion Rocks Optical Equipment Factory Near Moscow, Causing Injuries and Deaths
Moscow, Russia – A devastating explosion shattered the tranquility of Sergiyev Posad, a town located 70 kilometers northeast of Moscow, on Wednesday. The explosion occurred at the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant, a prominent facility that produces optical equipment for the Russian military.
Videos shared on social media showed plumes of smoke billowing high into the air as the explosion ripped through the plant. Local authorities quickly ordered a “total evacuation” of all nearby buildings, ensuring the safety of the surrounding community.
According to Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov, at least 30 people have been hospitalized, with six in intensive care. Additionally, 26 individuals sought medical attention but did not require hospitalization. State media reported that a total of 56 people had sought medical care as of Wednesday evening.
Tragically, one person has succumbed to their injuries, according to the state-run TASS news agency. Furthermore, 12 individuals remain unaccounted for, raising concerns about their well-being following the deadly blast.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation. While emergency services cited “workflow violations” as the probable cause, conflicting reports have emerged, suggesting a possible drone strike. Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case, focusing on the “violation of industrial safety requirements for hazardous production facilities.”
The Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant, also known as “ZOMZ,” is a vital part of Russia’s defense conglomerate Rostec. It specializes in producing night vision devices and binoculars for the Russian military.
The Moscow region’s prosecutor’s office confirmed that the explosion originated from an explosives warehouse located near the plant. State media identified the warehouse as belonging to “Piro Ross,” a fireworks supplier currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings. Piro Ross has faced safety violation warnings in recent years.
In response to the explosion, Sergiyev Posad’s administration has ordered the evacuation of all plant buildings and workshops. Many of these structures suffered significant damage, with shattered windows reported across the area.
The consequences of this explosion have left the community in shock, while authorities work diligently to determine the exact cause and ensure the safety of the surrounding population.
