Following a process of verification of sanitary requirements, Colombia received authorization to export beef to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

This achievement was made possible thanks to the joint work of the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) and the National Institute for the Surveillance of Medicines and Food (INVIMA), which obtained the approval of the sanitary inspection certificate by the Iranian Veterinary and Food Safety Institute (IVO).

Paula Andrea Cepeda, acting general manager of ICA, highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating: “The opening of the Iranian market is a significant step forward for our agricultural exports. With this agreement, Colombia now exports beef to 93 international destinations, strengthening the competitiveness of the sector.”

Strict sanitary standards

ICA has worked hard to ensure that Colombian producers meet the demanding international standards necessary to access markets such as Iran. The approval of this certificate is the result of the implementation of strict sanitary regulations that ensure the quality and safety of the product, allowing Colombia to continue positioning itself as a reliable supplier of beef in the global market.

Reactivation of trade between Colombia and Iran

This agreement not only strengthens Colombian beef exports, but also marks an important step in the reactivation of trade relations between Colombia and Iran. The trade dynamics between both countries had decreased considerably in recent years, going from exports worth US $4.96 million in 2016 to only US $110 thousand in 2021. With this new market opening, it is expected to reverse this trend and strengthen trade ties between both nations.

The authorization to export beef to Iran underlines the commitment of Colombian authorities to comply with high international standards, allowing the country’s producers to expand their presence in key markets and continue to diversify agricultural exports.
