Extremadura Election Debate Set for Thursday as Polls Indicate Tight Race
Table of Contents
A pivotal debate featuring all ten candidates vying for seats in the Assembly of Extremadura is scheduled for this Thursday, December 11, hosted by the Canal de Extremadura. The event comes as the region prepares for elections on Sunday, December 21, held just days before Christmas. While María Guardiola, the current acting president of the Board and candidate for the People’s Party (PP), will participate in this debate, she will not attend a separate event hosted by RTVE the following week.
A Full Field of Candidates to Participate
The regional debate will include representatives from a broad spectrum of political formations. Participants include Miguel Ángel Gallardo of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE); Óscar Fernández representing Vox; Irene de Miguel of United for Extremadura; Raúl Gonzalez from Together-Lift; Juan Viera of Extremadura Digna; Ignacio Segura of Citizens; Gerardo Rubio representing Nuevo Extremeñismo – Adelante Extremadura; Luis Blanco of WORLD+JUSTO; and María José German from the animalist party PACMA.
The debate format will be structured around five blocks. The first four, each lasting 30 minutes, will focus on key policy areas: economy and employment, equality, education and health, infrastructure, culture and tourism, and future challenges. A final 15-minute segment will allow for free-flowing discussion, concluding with a one-minute closing statement for each candidate. Organizers estimate the entire event will span approximately two and a half hours.
Key Candidates Face Scrutiny Ahead of Election Day
According to the latest available polls, four candidates are projected to secure representation in the Assembly following the December 21st election.
María Guardiola of the PP initiated the snap elections after failing to garner sufficient support for the regional budget. She aims to continue her leadership of the Board, but faces a challenging political landscape.
Miguel Ángel Gallardo, leading the PSOE, enters the election cycle burdened by controversy. Reports of alleged favoritism involving the brother of national leader Pedro Sánchez, coupled with scrutiny over the timing of an oral trial, have cast a shadow over his campaign.
Óscar Fernández, the Vox candidate, is benefiting from strong support from the national party leadership, particularly from leader Santiago Abascal, who has actively campaigned alongside him. Fernández has served as the party’s spokesperson in the Assembly since 2019 and was officially designated as a candidate on November 11.
Irene de Miguel, representing Unidas por Extremadura – a regional affiliate of Podemos – is seeking to build on her established presence in the Assembly, where she has served as a deputy since 2015. This election marks her third time leading the purple formation’s campaign.
The upcoming debate on Thursday represents a crucial opportunity for these candidates – and the remaining contenders – to present their visions for the future of Extremadura to the electorate. The outcome of the election will undoubtedly shape the region’s political trajectory in the years to come.
