Facebook Messenger Desktop App Discontinued: What Users Need too Know

Meta has officially ended support for the desktop versions of Facebook Messenger, leaving users of the Mac and Windows apps without a dedicated request as of today. The move, initially announced in October, signals a shift in the company’s messaging strategy and impacts how millions connect with friends and family.
The discontinuation of the desktop app has prompted Meta to redirect users to alternative platforms. For those accustomed to the convenience of a standalone Messenger application, the change requires adaptation. According to a company release, users attempting to launch the app will now be guided to either the Facebook website or the Facebook desktop app, depending on their operating system.
Diverging Paths for Mac and Windows Users
the transition differs slightly for users of Apple’s macOS and Microsoft’s Windows. Mac users, who do not have a dedicated Facebook desktop app, will be automatically redirected to the Facebook website for all messaging needs.”The Messenger app for Mac is being deprecated,” a company statement reads. “After deprecation, you won’t be able to log into this app and will be automatically redirected to use Facebook website for messaging.”
Windows users, however, have a more seamless path forward. They will be redirected to the existing Facebook desktop app, where they can continue their conversations with all the features previously available in Messenger, including desktop calling. “You can continue all your conversations directly from the Facebook desktop app, with all the same features you had on the Messenger app,” the company stated.
What About Messenger-Only Accounts?
Meta acknowledges that not all Messenger users have a corresponding Facebook account. For these individuals, the company offers a continued path to access their messages. “If you currently use Messenger without a Facebook account, you will be redirected to messenger.com where you can still log in without creating a Facebook account,” a senior official stated. This ensures continuity for those who prefer to use Messenger as a standalone dialog tool.
Chat History: A missed Prospect?
The fate of chat history was a concern for many users. While Meta previously offered guidance on preserving conversations, the window for proactive action has now closed. Before the cutoff date, users were advised to ensure they had secure storage enabled to safeguard their message history.
To check if secure storage was previously activated, users could:
- Click their profile photo.
- Select “Privacy & safety,” then click “End-to-end encrypted chats.”
- Click “Message storage,” then verify if “Turn on secure storage” was enabled.
Unfortunately, users who did not enable secure storage prior to the app’s discontinuation will likely lose access to their older message history. Meta has not provided a method for recovering chats from unsecure accounts.
Why did Meta discontinue the desktop apps? Meta discontinued the desktop apps to streamline its offerings and focus development on other platforms, primarily the Facebook website and the existing Facebook desktop app for Windows users.
Who is affected by this change? Users of the standalone Facebook Messenger desktop apps on both Mac and Windows are affected. Mac users are redirected to the Facebook website, while Windows users are redirected to the Facebook desktop app. Messenger-only
