AI Platforms Targeted in Sophisticated Cyberfraud Operation Linked to State Actors

A San Francisco-based startup, Factory, successfully disrupted a complex cyberattack orchestrated by a state-linked threat group aiming to repurpose its software development platform for large-scale fraud. The incident highlights a growing trend of adversaries leveraging artificial intelligence infrastructure for malicious purposes, and underscores the vulnerability of even cutting-edge AI companies to sophisticated probing.

Factory revealed that the attackers, some with connections to China-based entities, employed AI-based coding agents to fortify their infrastructure and dynamically circumvent the company’s cybersecurity measures. The ultimate goal, according to the company, was to aggregate access to multiple AI products and then resell that access as part of a broader criminal enterprise.

Attackers Exploit AI Access for Fraudulent Activities

“The attackers sought to exploit free-tier access and onboarding pathways across multiple AI providers, including Factory, in order to assemble an external, large-scale fraud and cybercrime operation,” a company spokesperson stated. “Their objective was to repurpose AI platforms like ours as compute and tooling nodes within a broader mesh of ‘off-label’ model usage.” This “off-label” usage refers to employing AI tools for purposes beyond their intended design, effectively turning them into components of a criminal network.

The attack, first detected on Oct. 11, spanned several days and involved thousands of organizations utilizing Factory’s Droid product in anomalous ways. Analysis of network traffic revealed a significant portion of the malicious activity originated from data centers and internet service providers located in China, Russia, and Southeast Asia.

During the investigation, investigators discovered active Telegram channels offering discounted or free access to premium AI coding assistants, alongside resources for vulnerability research and other cybercrime tools. This suggests a coordinated effort to build and distribute access to a suite of malicious capabilities.

Coincidence with Anthropic Espionage Campaign Raises Concerns

The timing of this attack coincided with a separate disclosure from Anthropic regarding a sophisticated espionage campaign also centered around AI infrastructure. This parallel activity suggests a broader, coordinated effort to test and exploit the security of leading AI companies. Factory has since shared its findings with relevant security agencies and regulatory authorities.

Adversaries Testing AI Defenses and Capabilities

One analyst noted that the Factory incident, alongside the Anthropic attacks, may serve multiple objectives for adversaries. “To demonstrate a viable [proof of concept] of AI-driven attack infrastructure and benchmark it against their own capabilities,” is a key motivation, according to the expert. Furthermore, these attacks allow threat actors to “probe the detection and response capabilities of the frontier AI companies themselves.”

This probing is crucial for understanding the strengths and weaknesses of emerging AI security systems, potentially informing future, more sophisticated attacks. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the evolving threat landscape and the need for continuous vigilance in the face of increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks leveraging the power of artificial intelligence.
