Aperture is hosting a free screening of the Emmy Award-winning documentary feature “F11 and Be There” (2020) on Saturday, Jan. 17. The film, directed by UNCSA School of Filmmaking professor Jethro Waters, offers a compelling look at the life and work of renowned photographer Burk Uzzle.
Waters is scheduled to participate in a question-and-answer session immediatly following the screening.

A Photographer’s journey
“F11 and Be There” chronicles Burk uzzle’s remarkable career, tracing his path from building a darkroom on his father’s porch to becoming a pivotal figure in 20th-century photography. The documentary explores Uzzle’s artistic vision and unwavering dedication to his craft. Uzzle’s work often focused on capturing the American experience, particularly during times of social and political upheaval. He documented the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War protests, and the changing cultural landscape of the 1960s and 70s.

Jethro Waters is an award-winning writer, director, producer, and cinematographer. His documentary, “F11 and Be There,” garnered an Emmy Award and received recognition as a New York Times Critics’ Pick. The film has been shown in theaters internationally and is available on numerous streaming platforms. waters, a professor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA), began the project as a way to understand the creative process and the legacy of a master photographer.
Waters also wrote, directed, produced, and filmed “gunfighter Paradise,” a dark comedy starring Jessica Hecht and Valient Himself, with Nancy Buirski serving as executive producer. his music video work, featuring artists such as John Cale and Angel Olsen, has appeared in publications like The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Billboard, The New York Times, Spin, and Pitchfork, reaching millions of viewers worldwide.
