Penn Faculty Senate Focuses on Belonging and University Updates

A key meeting of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, addressed initiatives to foster a more inclusive campus environment and provided updates from university leadership. The discussions, held in accordance with Faculty Senate Rules, aim to encourage broader dialogue among faculty and their representatives.

The Faculty Senate Executive Committee (SEC) convened to discuss critical issues facing the University of Pennsylvania, with a significant emphasis on cultivating a stronger sense of belonging for all members of the Penn community. Faculty are encouraged to share their feedback with the Senate Office via email at [email protected].

Chair’s Report and Constituency Updates

Kathleen Brown, chair of the Faculty Senate, began the meeting by summarizing a faculty gathering held in October. She also provided updates on ongoing matters being addressed by the tri-chairs on behalf of the Senate. Following this, Professor Brown invited reports from four SEC members representing various constituencies within the university.

Cultivating a Culture of Belonging

A central theme of the meeting was a discussion on strategies to promote cultures of belonging across Penn’s schools. The conversation was moderated by Professor Roy Hamilton, and featured insights from key administrators. Participants included Brighid Dwyer, SAS vice dean for academic excellence and engagement in the School of Arts and Sciences; Renita Miller, executive director of community engagement in the Wharton School; and Christopher Gary Simmons, director of student engagement & community building in the Weitzman School of Design. The discussion explored practical approaches to enhance inclusivity and support for students and faculty alike.

Presidential Update and Q&A

University of Pennsylvania President J. Larry Jameson delivered remarks on current events impacting both Penn and the broader landscape of higher education. He then engaged in a question-and-answer session with SEC members, addressing concerns and providing insights into the university’s strategic direction.

The SEC’s continued focus on these critical areas underscores Penn’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive academic community.
