BUENOS AIRES, December 21, 2025 – River Plate is aggressively reshaping its roster and, according to reports confirmed this Sunday, has initiated negotiations with defender Facundo Mura, who will be available on a free transfer from Racing at year’s end. The 26-year-old was also previously linked with a move to Inter Miami.
A Potential Messi Teammate? River Pursues Free Agent
River Plate is vying for the signature of Facundo Mura, who could opt for a move to MLS and play alongside Lionel Messi.
- River Plate has directly contacted Facundo Mura regarding a potential transfer.
- Mura is weighing offers from River Plate and Inter Miami.
- The defender’s versatility—playing both right and left back—appeals to River’s coaching staff.
- Mura has won five titles across his career with Racing and Colón.
The “Millionaire” reached out to Mura directly on Saturday, offering him 72 hours to decide between joining the Núñez-based club or potentially becoming a teammate of Lionel Messi in the United States. This pursuit highlights River’s ambition to bolster its defensive options ahead of the upcoming season.
Defensive Reinforcements on the Horizon
While Gonzalo Montiel is firmly established as the starting right-back for Marcelo Gallardo’s squad, the possibility of Fabricio Bustos’ departure creates a need for depth. Bustos experienced a dip in form towards the end of the recent season after a strong start as Montiel’s replacement.
Beyond addressing the right-back position, River sees value in Mura’s ability to play on the left side, an area where the club is actively seeking reinforcement. Mura has occasionally featured in that role throughout his career.
Did you know? In 2021, River Plate previously expressed interest in Mura when Alex Vigo arrived, but he ultimately joined Colón de Santa Fe on loan.
During the 2025 season, Mura primarily served as a substitute for Gastón Martirena, both in domestic league play and the Copa Libertadores. He consistently competed with Martirena for playing time during his tenure at Racing.
Throughout his career, the defender has accumulated an impressive trophy haul, winning four titles with Racing: the International Super Cup and Champions Trophy in 2022, the Sudamericana in 2024, and the Recopa in 2025. He also secured the Copa de la Liga in 2021 while playing for Colón. In total, Mura has made 148 appearances for Racing, scoring 12 goals – a notable figure for a defender. River Plate is also reportedly making progress in their pursuit of Jhohan Romaña.
