“Nuking the fridge” has become a shorthand in the film industry for moments when a plot veers so far into implausibility that it breaks immersion.

The term originated with the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, where Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones survives a nuclear blast by sheltering inside a refrigerator. Since then, critics have adopted the analogy, coining the phrase (via Wikipedia).

Fallout just “nuked its own fridge” in Season 2. The series depicts Maximus, a Knight of the Brotherhood of Steel, surviving the nuclear destruction of Shady Sands…inside a refrigerator.

But could this actually happen? Is surviving a nuclear explosion in a fridge-freezer even theoretically possible?

What George Lucas Said About Surviving a Nuclear Explosion in a Refrigerator

George Lucas was a co-writer on the script for the fourth Indiana Jones film. In 2012, he discussed his potential retirement in an interview with the New York Times.

The refrigerator came up during the conversation. Lucas stated:

According to many scientists, the chances of survival in this refrigerator are around 50:50.

However, Lucas’s assessment proved overly optimistic. The question of refrigerator survival has lingered online for years.

The Real Odds of Surviving a Nuclear Explosion in a Refrigerator

Let’s be blunt: Neither Indiana Jones nor Maximus could have survived a nuclear explosion inside a refrigerator.

A refrigerator simply isn’t equipped to…

Radiation

Heat

A refrigerator couldn’t withstand the heat generated by a nuclear explosion. The Center of Domestic Preparedness estimates that a nuclear explosion one kilometer from the epicenter still reaches approximately 1,650 degrees Celsius.

The heat would warp the refrigerator, causing it to rupture and crush anyone inside—even before considering the direct effects of the intense heat.

Shockwave

Here’s a bit of good news: If you’re about five miles (or eight kilometers) from the blast, your chances of survival are reasonably good—but not inside a refrigerator.

A refrigerator would actually *increase* the danger. It would become a projectile, potentially causing fatal injuries from impact.

The video expert recommends: Within eight kilometers of the epicenter, standard house walls offer adequate protection from the shockwave.

  • Stay away from windows (they will shatter).
  • Remain indoors for at least three days due to radioactive fallout.

In 2012, the website Overthinking It detailed how Indiana Jones would realistically die in the refrigerator scene. The same fate would likely befall Maximus from Fallout. Instead of survival, the more probable outcomes include:

  • Being crushed by the shock wave.
  • Being thrown through the air and suffering fatal injuries on impact.
  • Being burned alive by liquid lead.
  • Being incinerated by extreme heat.
  • Suffocating.
  • Dying from radiation exposure.
