Title: Family of Orlando Man Fatally Shot by Police Demand Answers After Viewing Body Camera Footage

Orlando, Florida – The family and loved ones of Derek Diaz, a 26-year-old man who was fatally shot by police in Orlando last week, expressed their frustration and raised further questions after viewing officers’ body-worn camera footage of the encounter. The incident has sparked controversy and calls for transparency in police actions.

According to the body camera footage released by the Orlando Police Department on Wednesday, Diaz was shot in the early morning hours of July 3 after being approached by several officers while sitting in a parked car. The footage shows an officer approaching Diaz from the driver’s side and briefly speaking to him. However, moments later, Diaz reaches towards the vehicle’s center console before an officer fires a single gunshot, fatally injuring him. The entire encounter lasted less than a minute.

Despite officers rendering aid to Diaz until first responders arrived and transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the viewing of the footage provided little closure for Diaz’s family, according to their attorney, Natalie Jackson. “They thought they might get answers. What we saw on the video left more questions than answers,” said Jackson.

One of the main questions raised by the family is why the police initially approached Diaz. Jackson stated that the video shows Diaz “sitting peacefully in a legally parked car when he was aggressively approached by three armed police officers, and in less than one minute, he was shot.”

Orlando Police Chief Eric D. Smith defended the actions of the officers involved, emphasizing the necessity of proactive patrols to remove illegal drugs and crime guns from the streets. He stated that the area where Diaz was confronted had experienced 431 incidents in the last 18 months. Smith added that an investigation is underway, which includes the collection of witness testimony and body camera video.

Contrary to the police department’s claims, Diaz’s family maintains that he was unarmed and there was no gun in his vehicle. Sonja Nava, the mother of Diaz’s young daughter, refuted allegations of wrongdoing, saying, “All we know from that video is that he was sitting in his car. He was doing nothing wrong. In less than a minute, he was dead.”

The names of the officers present during the shooting have not been released by the department. The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave.

The incident has prompted the Orlando Police Department to cooperate with a Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigation while simultaneously conducting its own internal inquiry to ensure transparency and accountability.

As the investigation continues, Diaz’s family and their attorney are calling for a comprehensive and fair examination of the incident, hoping that more answers will be provided to bring them the closure they seek.

The case adds to the larger national conversation surrounding police use of force and highlights the need for greater transparency in law enforcement operations.
