Manu Payet: The Voice Behind Kung Fu Panda’s Beloved Po

A surprising casting choice brought the iconic character of Po to life in French audiences: celebrated actor and humorist Manu Payet. For over a decade, Payet has lent his voice to the endearing panda in the globally successful “Kung Fu Panda” saga, joining a growing trend of animation studios enlisting prominent actors to elevate their productions.

The practice of casting well-known faces in voice roles is increasingly common. Gad Elmaleh voices Gru in Despicable Me, Franck Dubosc is Marin in Finding Nemo, Elie Semoun embodies Sid in Ice Age, and Audrey Fleurot portrayed a Shepherdess in Toy Story 4. While some purists within the dubbing community believe these roles are best suited for seasoned voice actors, the enthusiasm and talent brought by celebrities often prove undeniable.

Payet’s involvement began in 2008, when he was presented with the opportunity to voice the hero of Dreamworks’ latest animated feature. “At what point is a guy going to say no to that?” Payet recalled in a 2016 interview, remembering the moment he was offered the role. He described being approached by friends working with a major American distribution company, who presented him with the concept – a panda who practices kung fu – even before any visual designs were available. “I said, ‘Look… At what point is a guy going to say no to that?’ Yes, I remember very well where I was, and how quickly I said yes.”

Drawing on his experience as a radio host, Payet embraced the challenge of delivering rapid-fire dialogue, fully immersing himself in the role. He expressed his genuine excitement about participating in the franchise, revealing himself to be a long-time fan of martial arts. “I’m a big fan of martial arts, so I couldn’t believe that I was going to be this guy, that I was going to play this character. The moves are so well done, the fights are so well choreographed…”

Beyond his work as Po across all four installments of the Kung Fu Panda series, Payet has also voiced Nestor in Happy Feet and Bill in the animated adaptation of Boule & Bill.

This casting strategy reflects a broader trend within the animation industry, as studios seek to attract wider audiences and enhance the appeal of their films.
