FBI Releases Surveillance Images in Disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s Mother
The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department in Arizona have released surveillance photos and videos of an individual connected to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie. Authorities are seeking the public’s help in identifying the masked person, offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery or a conviction in the case.
The images, released Tuesday, depict the individual on the porch of Nancy Guthrie’s Tucson, Arizona, home. A 27-second video shows the person approaching the front door and raising a gloved hand toward a home security camera before walking away. Another 14-second video shows the individual facing the camera, holding a flashlight in their mouth, and then covering the camera lens with vegetation – identified by law enforcement officials as prairie brush.
According to law enforcement sources, the masked figure may be armed, with a possible gun visible on the front of their belt. The individual’s behavior suggests familiarity with the presence of security cameras on the property. “From their behavior, the individual appears to already know there’s a camera on the Guthrie’s home,” a source stated.
The investigation took a significant turn when authorities recovered the footage from “residual data located in backend systems.” The FBI reportedly collaborated with Google to retrieve the video from a Nest camera. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos revealed Thursday that a doorbell camera at the Guthrie residence was disconnected at approximately 1:47 a.m. on February 1st, the day Nancy Guthrie was reported missing. While another camera detected a person at 2:12 a.m., footage was initially unavailable due to the homeowner not subscribing to a video storage service.
Currently, the individual is considered a “subject” of interest, but not a suspect, according to two law enforcement sources. Investigators are also tracking several vehicles captured on surveillance cameras in the area on the night of the disappearance and have examined Nancy Guthrie’s car and a camera removed from her roof for potential clues.
The case has garnered national attention, prompting a response from the White House. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced a delay in Tuesday’s press briefing as she and President Trump reviewed the newly released footage. “The prayers of this entire White House are with Savannah and her family at this time,” Leavitt said, adding that the President encourages anyone with information to contact the FBI.
Savannah Guthrie has been actively appealing to the public for assistance, sharing her family’s desperation on social media. “Someone out there recognizes this person,” she wrote in a post. “We believe she is still out there. Bring her home.” In a video message, Guthrie implored anyone with information, no matter how small, to come forward. “We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help.”
The investigation is also examining a ransom note that demanded payment in bitcoin, though an FBI spokesperson stated Monday that there has been no recent communication between the Guthrie family and the suspected kidnappers. “Someone has that one piece of information that can help us bring Nancy home,” the spokesperson said. “We need that person to share what they know. Please call us at 1-800-CALL-FBI.”
Adding to the urgency, authorities have noted that Nancy Guthrie left behind critical medication when she disappeared. Over the weekend, Savannah Guthrie, along with her siblings Annie and Camron, issued a direct plea to those responsible for her mother’s disappearance, offering to pay for her safe return. “We beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her,” Savannah Guthrie said in an Instagram video. “This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us, and we will pay.”
