It must become a matter of course that the allocation of funds is linked to values and interests. This includes, among other things, the readmission of deported citizens. We want to consistently sanction and, if necessary, end cooperation with partners who violate the rules. In the negotiations on the 2025 budget, we will use these points to carry out a critical assessment of our development policy projects.

In the area of humanitarian aid, we should pay more attention to only supporting multilateral institutions that work efficiently, impartially and transparently, and then do so more consistently and in sufficient amounts. Of course, we must ensure that we retain political control over our contributions in order to be able to suspend payments in the event of justified criticism, such as in the case of UNRWA Gaza, or in extreme cases to stop them completely.

Ultimately, the financing of our international commitment must be based on our interests and our values. To put it simply: we need impact- and value-oriented budget management, including in the international sphere. Freedom, security, democracy, human rights, competition, the social market economy – all of these are under pressure due to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and China’s increasingly aggressive behavior. As a result, the debt brake helps us to concentrate on the essentials internationally – on what benefits and protects us.
