More than 5,000 vaccines against the polio virus have been given in Jerusalem and the surrounding area since last Monday, all with the aim of preventing the outbreak of the virus in Israel.

As is well known, at the beginning of the week, the Ministry of Health announced that a case of polio (child paralysis) virus had been discovered in a girl from Jerusalem, after a decade during which the virus was not detected in Israel. It should be emphasized that the child infected with the virus was not vaccinated against the virus – a vaccine that is given in bulk to children from the age of two months to the age of 8 in several doses (details below).

Later this week, following extensive testing, evidence of the polio virus was found in two more samples.

To prevent the outbreak of the virus, the Ministry of Health, the Jerusalem Municipality and the HMOs launched an intensive and rapid vaccination campaign and called on parents of the relevant ages to bring their children to the polio virus vaccine. Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, which was launched last Monday, more than 5,000 children have been vaccinated – an average of about 1,250 vaccines a day.

The Ministry of Health notes that the first day was the most lame in terms of vaccines, but then, following the resolute reading of all the factors, the daily number of vaccines jumped and doubled.

Number of people vaccinated against the polio virus this week (data from the Ministry of Health):
Monday, 7.3 – 704.
Tuesday, 8.3 – 1,527
Wednesday, 9.3 – 1,772
Thursday, 10.3 – 1,236
A total of 5,239 children have been vaccinated since the beginning of the vaccination campaign.

The Ministry of Health stated: “In view of the growing demand, the Ministry of Health has ordered an increase in activity at milk drop stations in Jerusalem and the surrounding area. The Ministry of Health again calls on parents to ensure that their children receive all 4 vaccines The children who have not yet been vaccinated. “

The Ministry of Health further emphasizes: “The vaccine against the polio virus is the most effective and safest means of preventing infection with the virus and protecting against the disease.”

Polio – polio – is a virus that belongs to the family of intestinal viruses. Infection with the polio virus occurs from person to person through contact with saliva or fecal secretions. It should be noted that in the vast majority of cases – over 90 percent – the virus does not cause any symptoms. About 10 percent of the virus causes transient symptoms, including high fever, headaches and muscle weakness. In a single percentage of cases – the virus penetrates the nervous system and causes paralysis, usually in the legs.

As mentioned, the polio vaccine prevents the disease with absolute certainty. The vaccine consists of several subtypes of killed polio viruses. The vaccine is given to children in several doses – at the ages of two months, four months, six months, a year and again in the second grade.
