Federer to be Inducted into International Tennis Hall of Fame; Del Potro Falls Short
The International Tennis Hall of fame (ITHF) has announced its Class of 2026, with Roger Federer as the sole male tennis legend selected for induction. Despite a strong nomination,Argentine star Juan Martin del Potro did not receive the required votes and will remain eligible for future consideration.
The ITHF revealed the names of the inductees on Thursday, solidifying FedererS place among the greats of the sport. The “Swiss Master” will be formally recognized at a ceremony in Newport, Rhode Island, from August 27-29, 2026. He will be joined by commentator Mary Carillo, who will be inducted in the “Contributor” category.
Federer’s inclusion was widely anticipated, given his unparalleled career achievements. A senior official stated that his record “speaks for itself.” The 44-year-old boasts an astounding 20 Grand Slam titles – including eight Wimbledon championships, six Australian Open titles, five US Open victories, and one Roland Garros crown. He also holds the record for 310 weeks ranked no. 1 in the world, with a remarkable 237 consecutive weeks at the top. Throughout his career,Federer secured 109 tournament titles.
However, the absence of Del Potro from this year’s class came as a surprise to many. Despite a compelling resume, the Argentine failed to reach the 75% positive vote threshold required for induction, a figure combining votes from the public and tennis professionals. Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsova also did not receive enough votes.
Del Potro’s accomplishments include a stunning victory at the 2009 US Open – defeating Federer himself in the final – and leading Argentina to a Davis Cup title in 2016.He also earned two Olympic medals: a silver in Rio 2016 and a bronze in London 2012. Moreover, the “Tower of Tandil” accumulated 20 wins against members of the “Big Four” – Roger Federer,Rafael Nadal,Novak Djokovic, and andy Murray.
Both Del Potro and Kuznetsova will remain on the list of nominees for the Class of 2027, which is expected to be highly competitive. The potential candidacy of Serena Williams is already generating significant anticipation, promising an even more challenging selection process.
