Federica Brignone Clinches Victory in Sölden as Stjernesund’s Medal Hopes Fade

Federica Brignone won the race.

Stjernesund was in 4th place before the final round, but the hope for a podium finish faded after a somewhat disappointing conclusion.

Italian Federica Brignone triumphed ahead of Alice Robinson from New Zealand and Julia Scheib from Austria.

Shiffrin was greatly disappointed in the final round after leading following the first run and finished in 5th place.

Stjernesund concluded last season with a 2nd place and a personal best in the World Cup in the giant slalom race in Soldeu.

Despite not achieving a podium place in Sölden, the 27-year-old showed that she will be a contender for podium finishes in giant slalom this season.

Stjernesund felt good before the final run, after a first run she was quite satisfied with.

– It was a very good feeling at the top and into the pitch. I noticed that if you approached it a bit too straight on, the outside ski would slip a bit, so I became a bit cautious and lost too much time. Other than that, I am very satisfied, Stjernesund told VGTV about her 1st run.

Top ten for Holtmann

Mina Fürst Holtmann finished in ninth place. The 29-year-old was in tenth place after the first run.

After the first run, the 29-year-old felt that the conditions would become more challenging as more skiers would set out.

– It wasn’t very chewed up when I came, but it will become that. The snow is a bit soft. It could be that those coming behind lose more and more due to the conditions, said Holtmann.

Kristin Lysdahl and Marte Monsen also participated for Norway, but neither managed to qualify for the final round. Lysdahl finished just outside the top 30 in 33rd place, while Monsen crashed early.

Lara Gut-Behrami, who won the World Cup in giant slalom last season, did not start in the race in Sölden. The Swiss skier didn’t feel 100 percent before the giant slalom event.

Braathen back on Sunday

On Sunday, Henrik Kristoffersen and the male skiers will compete in the same event in Sölden. Lucas Pinheiro Braathen is making his comeback after a year away from the alpine circuit.

The 24-year-old stepped back as a skier before last season, following a long-standing conflict with the Norwegian Ski Federation. Now Braathen will represent Brazil, which is his mother’s homeland.

The Austrian legend Marcel Hirscher is also back. The 35-year-old will represent the Netherlands and returns after concluding his alpine career in 2019.

Aleksander Aamodt Kilde announced earlier this week that he must undergo another surgery and will miss the entire upcoming season.
