Nationwide Protests Erupt Following ICE Shooting in Minneapolis
A surge of demonstrations is sweeping across the United States this weekend, ignited by the death of Renee Good and fueled by growing opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies.
The protests, coordinated under the banner of “ICE Out For Good Weekend of Action,” follow the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. at least 1,000 events were planned across the country on Saturday and Sunday, organized by Indivisible, a progressive grassroots coalition. Demonstrators are demanding accountability and an end to what they describe as a system operating with impunity.
“Renee Nicole Good was a wife, a mother of three, and a member of her community,” stated Leah Greenberg, a co-executive director of Indivisible, in a statement released Friday.”She, and the dozens of other sons, daughters, friends, siblings, parents, and community members who have been killed by ICE, should be alive today. ICE’s violence is not a statistic, it has names, families, and futures attached to it, and we refuse to look away or stay silent.”
In Minneapolis, a large bird puppet, crafted by the In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater, was carried down Lake street during Saturday’s march, symbolizing the community’s resistance. Demonstrators carried signs and chanted “ICE out now!” One protestor, a 31-year-old grocery store worker, expressed concern that increased ICE presence could escalate tensions. “If more ICE officers are deployed to the streets, especially a place here where there’s very clear public opposition to the terrorizing of our neighborhoods, I’m nervous that there’s going to be more violence,” he said. “I’m nervous that there are going to be more clashes with law enforcement officials, and at the end of the day I think that’s not what anyone wants.”
The unrest began the night before, with a “noise protest” in downtown Minneapolis drawing an estimated 1,000 people. According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, 29 individuals were arrested.Protesters gathered outside hotels believed to be housing ICE agents, chanting, playing drums, and banging pots. A segment of the group reportedly damaged hotel windows, and one police officer sustained an injury from a thrown chunk of ice.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the acts of violence while acknowledging the peaceful nature of the majority of protesters. “To anyone who causes property damage or puts others in danger: you will be arrested,” Frey stated on social media. “We are standing up to Donald trump’s chaos not with our own brand of chaos, but with care and unity.”
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) defended the agency’s actions, stating, “the first Amendment protects speech and peaceful assembly – not rioting, assault and destruction,” and adding that “DHS is taking measures to uphold the rule of law and protect public safety and our officers.”
The shooting of Renee Good occurred the day after DHS initiated a large-scale immigration enforcement operation in Minnesota, deploying 2,000 immigration officers across the state. Similar demonstrations unfolded in other cities. In Philadelphia, approximately 500 demonstrators participated in a “cooperative and peaceful” march at City Hall, resulting in no arrests, according to Philadelphia Police Department spokesperson Tanya Little. In portland, Oregon, protesters rallied outside a hospital where immigration enforcement agents transport injured detainees.
Adding to the escalating tensions, U.S. Border Patrol agents shot and injured a man and a woman in Portland on Thursday. DHS identified the individuals as Luis David Nino-Moncada and Yorlenys Betzabeth Zambrano-Contreras, both from Venezuela. Officials asserted that the agents acted in self-defense after the pair “weaponized their vehicle,” a claim mirroring their explanation in the shooting of renee Good.
The protests represent a growing wave of resistance against increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement tactics, and underscore the deep divisions surrounding immigration policy in the United States.
