Former ‘Big Brother’ Contestant Joins Weight Loss Reality Show, Cites Impact on Self-Esteem and Intimacy
A growing number of reality television personalities are turning to weight loss programs for public transformations, and the latest participant is Virginia Demo, a former contestant from Argentina’s ‘Big Brother.’ Demo has joined ‘Weight Issue’ (El Trece) with the goal of improving her health and addressing deep-seated insecurities related to her weight.
Demo, 57, of La Plata, openly discussed the profound impact excess weight has had on her life, extending beyond physical health to affect her self-perception and relationships. “I know that for many it is not a lot, but it affects many parts of my life, not to mention the sexual part,” she stated during her introduction to the show. “I don’t feel comfortable with myself so I avoid situations. And the truth is that I don’t want to look in the mirror.”
The contestant revealed a desire to reclaim a sense of self-love and desirability. “I have the need to feel desired again, but desired by me,” she explained. “I can’t be in a relationship because if I don’t get erotic with myself, I’d rather end it there. I don’t like myself, I don’t like looking in the mirror naked. I spend time in the bathroom trying not to look at myself.”
Demo acknowledged that weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, is a common experience for women navigating menopause. She emphasized the importance of structure and professional guidance in achieving her goals. “My security is going to change with everything, with work… I need to be controlled with the weight issue because I can’t do it alone. I need rigor, which I have to comply with,” she said. The pressures of the entertainment industry, which she described as a world of “hegemony and youth,” further motivated her decision to participate.
The impact on her personal life is significant. Demo admitted that her current focus prevents her from pursuing romantic relationships, despite receiving offers. “Sex is 80% of a relationship, but… I’m really focused on something else at this moment in my life and I don’t focus on that again because of this. There are proposals but I don’t even take them into account.”
Unhealthy Habits and a Starting Point
Demo was candid about her current eating habits, describing them as “a disaster,” particularly regarding timing and discipline. She confessed to frequently skipping meals until late in the afternoon, leading to overeating – often in the form of processed foods like french fries. Social gatherings with friends also contribute to her challenges.
Her daily routine includes a non-negotiable soda, and she indulges in sweet treats like dulce de leche or ice cream every evening while watching movies.
The initial weigh-in revealed a surprising result: 89.7 kilograms, exceeding the expectations of the show’s specialists. Demo initially expressed a desire to lose 20 kilograms, but nutritionist Alberto Cormillot, after calculating her body mass index based on her height of 1.69 meters, determined that a 10-kilogram loss, at a rate of at least 500 grams per week, was a more realistic and healthy goal.
Demo’s story highlights the complex relationship between weight, self-esteem, and overall well-being, and underscores the challenges many individuals face in achieving lasting lifestyle changes. Her willingness to publicly address these issues may resonate with viewers and inspire others to prioritize their health.
