Lanester, France – A fire broke out Wednesday morning at Ouest Protection Multi-Services (OPMS), a company specializing in the design and manufacture of industrial protective equipment, prompting a large response from emergency services. Even as all employees were safely evacuated, the incident has left workers shaken and facing uncertainty about the future of the business. The initial alert came around 8:15 AM when an employee noticed an unusual odor while operating machinery. Judikael, an OPMS employee, was the first to detect the smell, describing it as something “not usual.” Having experienced a diminished sense of smell following a COVID-19 infection, he immediately sought confirmation from a colleague, Romain. “We went outside the workshop, and Romain confirmed the odor,” Judikael recounted. “And we looked up.” Above them, flames were already visible, quickly escalating the situation. The company, which provides protective solutions for clients including Naval Group, was fortunately staffed by only three employees at the time of the incident, allowing for a rapid evacuation.
Rapid Response and Explosions
The fire originated in the office of Christophe Alexandre, co-managing director of OPMS, who was fortunately on a separate work site at the time. The three employees present attempted to extinguish the blaze with a fire extinguisher, but were quickly overwhelmed by the thick, black smoke and intense heat. They managed to evacuate a scooter, a bicycle, and one gas cylinder, but were unable to reach the remaining two. Around 8:45 AM, those cylinders exploded, adding to the intensity of the fire and prompting a significant emergency response.
Firefighters from across the department responded to the scene, deploying a total of 17 vehicles and approximately 60 personnel. Local and national police also secured the area, alongside an emergency gas team and Gilles Carréric, the mayor of Lanester, who arrived to assess the situation and offer support. Firefighters reported that approximately 1,000 square meters of warehouse space was affected, including 500 square meters belonging to OPMS, with 200 square meters dedicated to storage.
The Nature of the Materials and Damage Assessment
Christophe Alexandre noted that much of the company’s materials are fire-retardant, meaning they don’t readily combust but rather melt under high heat. This melting process, but, created the dense, black smoke visible for miles, reportedly as far away as Locmiquélic. Le Télégramme, a regional news outlet, provided initial coverage of the event.

Alexandre expressed concern not only for the physical assets but also for the company’s records, and data. “All our affairs, all our files… will we be able to work in the coming weeks?” he questioned, reflecting the anxiety felt by employees. As of 10:00 AM Wednesday, the area surrounding the OPMS facility remained cordoned off, with firefighters continuing to battle the blaze and ensure the safety of the surrounding area.
