The Guinean Federation for the Promotion of Associations of Persons with Disabilities (FEGUIPAH) launched the campaign for the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) in Conakry on Wednesday 12 July. The Maison de la presse located in the Minière district served as the setting for the ceremony organized under the theme: “Launch of the national campaign for the signing of an international petition in favor of the inclusion of people with disabilities.” The objective is to promote the access of disadvantaged people to education and health, in particular. It was also a question of reminding the authorities of their commitment and their obligation towards people with disabilities as set out in the Convention on the Rights of the Disabled.

The subject of education, the fourth objective of the SDGs, was developed by the Secretary General of the Guinean Union of the Blind and Visually Impaired (UGALM). Ensuring and guaranteeing free, equitable and quality education for people with disabilities by 2030 is one of the objectives of the SDGs, which FEGUIPAH wants to achieve. The general secretary of the NGO, Bakary Mansaré, launched an appeal. “We need to break down the barriers to inequality and promote access to education for all people with disabilities. It should be remembered that the learning conditions in schools, universities and vocational training centers do not promote equality at all. An education is not only training, it is a whole process: training, system of final evaluation. Today, many of our children with disabilities face many challenges. »

Among them, the absence of ramps for people with reduced mobility in schools and universities. This is why FEGUIPAH has requested their implementation in establishments. Bakary Mansaré explains: “You will notice that in the countries of the sub-region, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and so many others, they have now moved towards inclusive education. In Guinea, there are many workshops, seminars organized in relation to inclusive education, but on the ground, the reality is quite different, many schools are non-inclusive. For what ? Because the establishments do not take into account the access ramp, that is to say a person in a wheelchair cannot access, for example, a classroom which is on the fourth floor; which is really unfortunate. We need accessibility for all”, pleads the Secretary General of FEGUIPAH.

This violates one of the SDGs, the right to education. Hence this call from the NGO: “We call on world leaders to make the achievement of the SDGs a priority and to take transformative and accelerated measures that include people with disabilities”.
