Rimini Reclaims its Cinematic Legacy with Fellini Award and Ambitious Production Plans

A renewed focus on film and television production is taking hold in Rimini, Italy, following the prestigious Fellini Award ceremony on Sunday, where Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón was honored.Local officials are framing this resurgence not as an endpoint, but as “a new beginning” for the region’s long-standing connection to the world of cinema.
A Riviera Renaissance: Film and TV Return to Romagna
Rimini and the surrounding province have recently experienced a surge in on-location filming. Production recently wrapped on Cagnàz, a Rai drama starring Guido Caprino, directed by Alessandro Roia. concurrently, Arabella’s kidnapping, directed by Carolina Cavalli and featuring Benetta Porcaroli and Lucrezia Guglielmino, enjoyed a week-long theatrical run after being largely filmed on the Riviera. Additionally, the Rai fiction The Recipe for Happiness, directed by Giacomo Campiotti and starring Cristiana capotondi, captivated audiences in the fall, showcasing the beauty of Rimini and the broader Romagna region.
“We are already in negotiations with Rai and some well-known production companies to host the filming of other films and TV series in 2026,” a senior official stated, emphasizing a significant economic investment. Beyond providing locations, the municipality intends to offer comprehensive services and logistical support to incoming productions. While specific titles remain confidential, assurances were given that discussions involve “crucial titles,” spurred by the influx of industry professionals attending the Fellini Award ceremony honoring Cuarón.
Festival synergy and the Italian Global Series Festival
The region’s vibrant festival landscape is also undergoing a period of strategic progress. Approximately ten film festivals operate within the province, including La Settetta Arte, Luoghi dell’anima, and Amarcort in Rimini, alongside events like the Bellaria Film Festival and the Not Film Fest in Santarcangelo. Efforts are underway to foster greater collaboration between these festivals, enhancing their individual prizes and collective impact. This synergy will extend to partnerships with institutions like the Cineteca di Bologna.
Looking ahead to 2026, the Italian Global Series Festival, a television series festival promoted by the Ministry of Culture, is slated to return. The 2024 event drew prominent figures like Kevin Spacey and other leading names in Italian and international cinema to Rimini and Riccione.
Honoring Fellini’s Legacy and Expanding the Museum
The revival of the Fellini Award after a 14-year hiatus – the last edition was held in 2011 – and its presentation to Cuarón, is viewed as a pivotal moment. “Returning after 14 years to assign the Fellini Award to a world-famous director like Cuarón, represents a decisive step towards returning to making Rimini, more and more, a land of cinema,” the official explained. This renewed recognition is expected to bolster the Fellini Museum, which welcomed 50,000 visitors in 2024.
The municipality has recently acquired Fellini’s personal library,comprising over 2,000 volumes,and is currently undertaking a comprehensive cataloging project. “The Maestro’s personal library will soon be valorised in Fellini Museum,” ensuring this invaluable collection is accessible to scholars and enthusiasts alike. Officials are committed to enhancing the museum’s appeal, recognizing its substantial potential to attract a wider audience and further cement Rimini’s place as a cinematic destination.
