The state of São Paulo recorded an 8.5% increase in cases of femicide between January and November 2023. According to data from the SSP (Secretariat of Public Security), 190 women were murdered, compared to 175 victims in the same period last year. The report “Visible and Invisible: the victimization of women in Brazil”, by the Brazilian Public Security Forum, also shows that all forms of violence against women showed marked growth in the last year in Brazil, which includes physical assaults, sexual offenses and psychological abuse. Gospel singer Sara Mariano, aged 35, was found charred in a forested area on the banks of a road in metropolitan region of Salvador (BA). The body was found in the city of Dias d’Ávila, on October 27, three days after the singer disappeared. The first suspect arrested was the victim’s husband, Ederlan Santos Mariano, who confessed to the murder. His arrest occurred one day after Sara’s body was found.
