Ferrari Unveils Ultra-Exclusive SC40, a Bespoke Tribute to the F40 Icon

A collector’s ambitious vision has materialized in the Ferrari SC40, a one-of-a-kind supercar inspired by the legendary F40 and built upon the foundation of the 296 GTB. The vehicle’s price remains undisclosed, though estimates suggest it easily surpasses €5 million, placing it firmly beyond the reach of all but the most affluent automotive enthusiasts.
The Allure of Bespoke Ferraris
For many, owning any new Ferrari represents a significant achievement. But for those with extensive collections, the ultimate expression of automotive passion lies in commissioning a truly unique vehicle. Ferrari’s Special Projects program caters to this rarefied clientele, transforming existing sports car platforms with custom bodies and interiors. The brand undertakes only two or three such projects annually, but the SC40 represents a particularly ambitious undertaking – a modern interpretation of one of Ferrari’s most revered models.
Echoes of a Legend: The F40’s Enduring Legacy
The F40, produced in approximately 1,200 units, holds an almost mythical status among Ferrari aficionados. Its price has steadily risen, now reaching around €3 million, a testament to its enduring appeal. Introduced in 1987 to commemorate the brand’s 40th anniversary, it was the last Ferrari launched under the guidance of Enzo Ferrari himself.
The F40’s 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, an evolution of the 288 GTO, delivered 478 CV and a raw, visceral driving experience. Its design, penned largely by Leonardo Fioravanti, was strikingly reminiscent of Group C racing cars. As Fioravanti recalled, Enzo Ferrari himself demanded a “real Ferrari,” leading to a design focused on downforce, a polycarbonate rear window similar to the 250 LM Special, and a substantial rear wing. “Enzo told me: ‘my dear engineer, do for me a real Ferrari’,” Fioravanti recounted in his memoirs.
The SC40: A Modern Interpretation
The development of the SC40 began roughly two years ago, entrusted to the design department led by Flavio Manzoni since 2010. Manzoni emphasized the delicate balance between honoring the F40’s legacy and creating a distinct identity for the new car. “We have to listen to the clients but also guide them,” he stated, acknowledging the need to refine even the most extravagant requests. The goal, he explained, was to develop “a model with its own personality, without literally reinterpreting the car that inspires it.”
The SC40 is built on the architecture of the 296 GTB, utilizing its V6 biturbo hybrid powertrain producing a combined 830 CV. Design cues are drawn from recent Ferrari models like the 849 Testarossa, evident in the tires, nose shape, and side air intakes. However, the SC40 also incorporates elements directly referencing the F40, including a low nose with integrated headlights, a rear spoiler, and darkened lexan grilles over the engine.
Distinctive Details and Interior Refinements
While paying homage to the F40, the SC40 deliberately omits certain iconic features, such as the NACA-type air intakes, triple exhaust, and double round rear lights – opting instead for the taillights of the 296 GTB. The driving position mirrors that of the 296, but the interior incorporates kevlar, a material synonymous with the F40, reimagined with a new finish. This material adorns the steering wheel, cabin floor, center console, and air vents, extending into the engine compartment and trunk.
A full-scale model of the SC40 has been on display at the Ferrari Museum since October 18th.

The original F40, despite its legendary status, is notoriously challenging to drive, demanding respect and skill. Its untamed character, devoid of the electronic aids prevalent in modern supercars, provides a uniquely engaging – and sometimes intimidating – experience. The interior, with its scent of gasoline and raw materials, and its heavy pedals and gear lever, rewards patience and mastery.
The new SC40, a true “unicorn” with an unknown owner and future, represents the pinnacle of bespoke automotive artistry. Built upon the robust foundation of the 296 GTB – evidenced by the shared roofline, cabin dimensions, wheelbase, and side air intakes – it delivers breathtaking performance thanks to its advanced hybrid powertrain. This includes a 663 CV V6 engine coupled with an additional 122 kW (167 HP) electric motor.
