A revamped qualification pathway for 3×3 basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics has been announced by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), promising a more inclusive and competitive route to the Games for both men’s and women’s teams.
The changes aim to broaden participation and reflect the growing global popularity of the fast-paced basketball format. A total of 11 Olympic berths will be up for grabs in Los Angeles.
Olympic Qualification: A Two-Pronged Approach
The qualification process will be divided into two primary avenues: performance in dedicated qualifying tournaments and standing in the FIBA World Ranking. Six tickets to the Olympic tournament will be awarded through four qualifying tournaments scheduled between March and June 2028. These events are anticipated to be highly competitive, testing teams’ strength and mental fortitude.
“These tournaments will be a real test of the strength and resilience of teams, especially emotionally intense ones,” a senior official stated.
The remaining five tickets will be allocated to the highest-ranked national teams in the FIBA World Ranking as of December 2027, with a focus on regional representation. This ensures that leading teams from Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Asia/Oceania have an opportunity to compete. Specifically, the distribution will see one team qualify from Africa, North America, and South America, one from Europe, and two from Asia and the Pacific region.
Tournament Structure & Regional Focus
The four qualifying tournaments will vary in the number of tickets awarded. Two tournaments will each award two Olympic spots, while the remaining two will each award one. This structure is designed to maximize opportunities for teams of all sizes, providing additional incentive for smaller nations to compete.
Qualification via the FIBA World Ranking will prioritize teams from key regions, ensuring a diverse geographical representation at the Games. This regional approach is a significant step forward in the development of 3×3 basketball, making the road to the Olympics even more intriguing.
Expanded Olympic Format Signals Growth
The Los Angeles Olympics will see an expansion of the 3×3 basketball tournaments for both men and women, increasing from eight teams to 12. This expansion is a clear indication of the sport’s increasing global appeal.
FIBA President Sheikh Saud Ali Al Thani and Secretary General Andreas Zagklis have expressed their enthusiasm for the decision, calling it “a turning point for FIBA and the sport of 3×3 in general.” They emphasized that the expanded format will “open new doors for national federations and players around the world to dream of participating in the Olympic Games.” As the host nation, the USA is automatically guaranteed a place in the tournament, adding an extra layer of excitement to the competition.
Latvia Eyes New Challenges
For the Latvian 3×3 basketball team – gold medalists at the Tokyo Olympics and fourth-place finishers at the Paris Olympics – these changes present both a challenge and an opportunity. While specific details on Latvia’s qualification pathway remain unclear, the team is preparing for a demanding but exciting road to Los Angeles.
FIBA’s commitment to promoting 3×3 basketball and ensuring broader national representation underscores the importance of every game and tournament. Latvian fans are hopeful that their team will adapt to the new rules and continue to contend for medals.
