The Algerian actress Chafia Boudraa, a great personality of cinema and theater in her country, and who had notably played in the political thriller Outlaw presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010, died at the age of 92, state media reported on Monday.
Chafia Boudraa, born in Constantine on April 22, 1930 and widow of an FLN fighter who died during the Algerian war in 1960, was known for her roles in cult feature films such as El Hariq et L’Evasion by Hassan Terro. She died on Sunday May 22 in Algiers.
During a rich career of more than fifty years, she had also played in the film Outlaw by Rachid Bouchareb, who represented Algeria at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010. In this political thriller that follows the fate of three war-torn brothers in Algeria, she played the role of the mother. The film had aroused a lively controversy in France, the extreme right and associations of repatriates from Algeria accusing him of “falsify” the story.
The death of Chafia Boudraa occurred a few days after that, on Friday, of another monument of Algerian cinema, the actor and director Ahmed Benaissa, who had also played the role of the father in Outlaw. Ahmed Benaissa, who starred in Goutte d’Or, presented at Cannes, died there suddenly before the screening of the film as part of Critics’ Week.
